Check if your "worker" is legal. Bottom of this Page.
Siret numbers:
In France it is up to the employer (thats you) to ensure that any tradesmen/artisans used are properly registered and insured. This involves checking their Siret number which consists of 14 numbers – the first 9 being the Siren number.
We repeat that It is the householder’s responsibility to ensure that trades people they are using are properly registered and insured - there are large penalties on both sides for using unregistered "trades" people.
All legitimate trades and businesses must be registered with either the Chambre de Métiers, Chambres de Commerce, Services Fiscaux, Tribunaux de Commerce, or their regional INSEE.
Always ask any artisan/tradesmen if you can look at their "Carte d'identification". This will have been issued to them by their Chambre de Metiers. Check that they are correctly registered for the trade they are offering (ape code) and always ask to see their relevant insurance documents - in the case of an electrician, builder etc this will include their Ten Year ‘Decenal’ Guarantee.
Siret/siren numbers can be checked via the websites 1 - 4 below. INSEE is the most accurate.
Once you have the details of the APE code (after entering the Siren number at INSEE), you then check the APE codes, which have recently changed all over France, by using the bottom link on this page. Doing so will list all the work that the Artisan is legally registered to do and therefore protect you from the local Cowboys and more importantly, retribution by the French authorities against you. See footnotes.
eg. local to us, an 80 year old french lady was imprisoned, luckily because of her age, only for 3 days, but that was for just paying her french gardener in cash on the black!

Just because there is a Siret, it doesn't mean that a toilet cleaner can legally build a brick wall. The new APE codes can be checked by clicking on recherche sous classe NAF
For your own benefit, Please use it!!
Note it also also "Interdict" to pay a bill of more than 3000 euro in cash.
Penalties can be very severe for breaching the
ART L 324-10 Code of Working
For you as an employer:
For the illegal worker:
Both Employer and worker risk a 5 year ban from France.
